Astaxanthan is a reddish-colored pigment is produced by microalgae, and ingested by several different forms of marine life, including salmon, lobster, shrimp, and other red-hued organisms, and flamingoes!
Most people don’t realize that baby flamingos are born white, and turn pink because of what they eat, shrimp and algae, which contain the astaxanthin! It is carotinoid similar to beta-carotene, which is found in orange plants and vegetables, but much more bioavailable. It is often referred to as King of Carotinoids!
I have recently been taking astaxanthin because I heard about it on Dr. Mercola’s site, and he sings it’s praises as an amazing antioxidant. Astaxanthin was found to be 6,000 times stronger than vitamin C, 500 times stronger than vitamin E, and 2,000 times stronger than resveratrol. Researchers have also found that astaxanthin has many other additional benefits, such as:
improves cardiovascular health
stabilizes blood sugar
improves beneficial HDL cholesterol
reduces inflammation to alleviate joint pain
improves eye health
powerful UV-blocking properties
improves skin moisture levels
increased skin tone and elasticity

There are only two known sources of astaxanthin – a microalgae called Haematococcus pluvialis and… sea creatures that consume this microalgae. The natural forms are under the names BioAstin®, AstaPure®. The synthetic form is AstaSana™ Although there are some differences between natural and synthetic astaxanthin, it is not clear that one form is better than the other. According to several sources I have found, krill oil seems to be the most bioavailable form of astaxanthin.
